Your role, the scholarship, your studies, daily life: what to ask a coach before you say yes to an offer.
An offer comes in, and it is a huge source of pride. But committing to a school means choosing where you will live, play and study for one or several years. The conversation with the coach goes both ways: they are evaluating you, and you have the right, and even the duty, to ask questions too.
About your role on the team
- What role do you see for me in my first season?
- How many players at my position are already on the roster, and how many are joining this year?
- How is playing time decided?
- What style does the team play, and how would I fit in?
About the scholarship and costs
- What exactly does the offer cover: tuition, housing, meals, books?
- For how long, and under which conditions is it renewed?
- What stays with my family: health insurance, flights, equipment?
- What happens if I get injured?
About your studies
- Which majors are open to players on the team?
- Is there academic support or tutoring for student-athletes?
- How are classes organised around practice and travel?
- What grades do I need to keep to stay eligible?
About day-to-day life
- Where will I live: on campus, in shared housing, with a host family?
- How are meals organised?
- Who do I turn to if I have a problem, on or off the court?
- Are there other international students on the team or at the school?
Listen as much as you ask
How the coach answers says a lot. A coach who answers clearly, knows your game and has actually watched your video is a good sign. Be wary of strong pressure to sign very quickly, without giving you time to think. And if you can, talk to players on the team: they will tell you what daily life is really like.
You are not facing the offer alone
