Physical preparation: arriving ready for the United States

4 min read

Strength, mobility, conditioning, recovery: why the physical side matters so much in the United States, and how to prepare for it now without skipping steps.

In the United States, the game is fast and physical. Many French players discover a higher physical pace than they were used to. The good news: you can prepare for it. And the earlier you start, the easier your arrival will be.

Why the physical side matters so much

American programs put a strong emphasis on conditioning. Weight training is often part of the week, just like team practice. A player who is solid on their feet, able to absorb contact and repeat efforts, earns the coach's trust more easily.

The basics to work on

You don't need to lift heavy to prepare well. The priorities are simple:

  • general strength: legs, core, upper body, with clean technique;
  • mobility and flexibility, to move better and limit injuries;
  • endurance and the ability to repeat sprints;
  • footwork, changes of direction and vertical jump.

Recovery is training too

Sleep, nutrition and hydration are part of preparation. A tired body progresses less and gets injured more. Building good habits before you leave, such as regular bedtimes and balanced meals, will help you keep up with a season of classes and practice.

Get proper supervision

A poorly suited program can do more harm than good, especially while you are still growing. Ideally, work with your club or a qualified strength coach who adapts the loads to your age and level. And if you have had an injury before, talk to a health professional before starting intensive work.

Our tips

  • Start a few months before you leave, not a few weeks.
  • Favor consistency: two or three well-done sessions beat random efforts.
  • Learn the basic movements with a coach before adding weight.
  • Listen to your body: lasting pain should be taken seriously.
  • Take care of your sleep and nutrition as much as your strength work.

A strength coach on the team

The UFM team includes a strength and conditioning coach, Sadoukane, founder of SDK Fitness Academy, who is present at our showcase sessions. It's a chance to assess your physical level and what you still need to work on before leaving. And if you wish, SDK Fitness Academy can support your physical preparation all the way to your departure. To talk about it, book your free call.
