Athletic scholarships in the US: how they really work

5 min read

Full ride, partial scholarship, academic aid: what a scholarship really covers, depending on the level and the type of school.

"Full ride", "partial scholarship", "financial aid"… Every family dreams of a scholarship, but the word covers very different realities depending on the level of play and the type of school. Before you talk numbers with a coach, you need to know what you are talking about.

What a scholarship covers

An athletic scholarship is financial aid a school grants to secure a player. It can cover all or part of four main costs: tuition, housing, meals, and books or equipment.

Even with a full scholarship, some costs almost always stay with the family:

  • return flights;
  • visa and application fees;
  • health insurance, depending on what the school requires or includes;
  • pocket money and day-to-day life.

What changes from one level to another

Each league has its own rules. In short:

  • NCAA Division 1: scholarships are usually full, but this is the most competitive level.
  • NCAA Division 2: scholarships are often partial. The coach splits a budget between several players.
  • NCAA Division 3: no athletic scholarships, but academic or financial aid is possible.
  • NAIA: partial or full scholarships, often combined with academic aid.
  • Junior college (NJCAA): scholarships are possible over two years, before moving on to a university.
  • High school and prep school: these are not college scholarships but reductions on fees. The project relies largely on the family budget.

Grades matter as much as your game

A strong academic record opens doors. Many universities offer academic scholarships on top of athletic aid. And for a coach, a player who is serious in class is a player who will stay eligible all season.

Read an offer before you sign it

Not all offers are equal. Before you say yes, check exactly what is covered, for how long, and under which conditions the scholarship is renewed. An offer can be compared with others, and it can be discussed.

How to earn one

A coach cannot offer a scholarship to a player they have never seen. It all starts with visibility: a clean highlight video, a clear profile and the right contacts. Ideally, the process starts 6 to 12 months before the school year.

That is the core of our work: building your athletic profile, connecting you with American coaches and negotiating the best possible offer. If you want to know what is realistic for you, book your free 30-minute call.
